Spira Theatre goes 100% wireless

Spira is the home for music and theatre for the Småland region in southern Sweden. Based in Jönköping, the culture centre was opened in 2011 and acts as a large hub for the whole of the area. Spira has 4 stages – 1 theatre stage in a room which accommodates around 400 people, one concert hall for an audience of about 900, a smaller room with space for 160 people and a stage in the cafeteria where 130 people can sit.

The centre has a broad scope, offering culture lovers everything from theatre and musicals to dance shows and children’s productions.

Hans-Richard Eriksson is Lighting Director at Spira and has worked with theatre lighting in Jönköping since 1980. When the decision was taken to create Spira as a cultural hub, he was able to design exactly how he wanted the lighting system to look – and he chose to go 100% wireless.

“Wireless DMX gives us much greater creative flexibility. For moving walls and scenery which needs to be lifted up and down, cables are not an option.”

Hans-Richard has over 100 fixtures at his disposal and all are controlled with wireless DMX using LumenRadio’s CRMX.

Several of LumenRadio’s Aurora transceivers are part of Spira’s set-up for wireless lighting control

“We now stream straight from our lighting controllers using sACN,” he adds. “We send data for multiple universes using Ethernet across our network. A Stardust picks up the sACN signal and transmits it to Aurora receivers placed throughout the building. We have wireless everywhere and not a cable winder in sight!”
