W-BACnet Compact wins AHR Expo Innovation Award

Jacob Hammar

LumenRadio’s newest W-BACnet device, Compact, has won the Building Automation category in the 2027 AHR Expo Innovation Awards. The award recognizes the innovation behind W-BACnet, LumenRadio’s technology for replacing BACnet cabling with a reliable wireless mesh network.

The AHR Expo Innovation Awards recognize manufacturers pioneering the future of HVACR through inventive products, systems, and technologies. Winners are selected by a panel of third-party ASHRAE member judges and evaluated based on innovative design, creativity, application, value, and market impact.

In the words of AHR Expo

W-BACnet Compact is the industry’s smallest wireless BACnet MS/TP cable replacement, enabling
fast, reliable building automation retrofits without running RS485 wiring. Featuring snap-on
installation, Bluetooth commissioning, auto-baud detection and LumenRadio’s
interference-resistant wireless mesh, it dramatically reduces installation time, cost and disruption
while preserving full BACnet interoperability.

An award-winning approach to wireless BACnet

W-BACnet Compact was the product entered into the competition, but the underlying technology is shared across LumenRadio’s W-BACnet portfolio. W-BACnet replaces BACnet MS/TP communication cabling with a wireless mesh network while maintaining full BACnet interoperability.

The technology is built on LumenRadio’s patented MiraMesh and Cognitive Coexistence technologies. Together, they provide self-forming and self-healing communication that continuously adapts to interference in the 2.4 GHz spectrum, enabling reliable, low-latency BACnet communication even in demanding building environments. A single W-BACnet Gateway can support nodes across multiple rooms, floors, or areas, making the network easy to scale for different building layouts.

W-BACnet Compact brings this proven technology into a smaller form factor designed for fast installation on or inside the wall. Its compact size, snap-on mounting, screw terminals, automatic baud-rate detection, and Bluetooth commissioning make it particularly easy to install close to room controllers, VAVs, fan coil units, and other BACnet MS/TP equipment.

With the latest firmware update, Compact and all other products in the W-BACnet portfolio also support Remote Diagnostics. This makes key wireless network health data accessible directly through the Building Management System, helping users monitor network performance and troubleshoot installations remotely.

W-BACnet Compact also has an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD), providing transparent information about the product’s environmental impact throughout its lifecycle.

Making building automation retrofits faster

By replacing BACnet MS/TP communication cabling with a reliable wireless mesh network, W-BACnet removes much of the time, cost, and disruption associated with conventional building automation retrofits.

System integrators can connect existing BACnet devices without installing new RS485 communication cabling. This reduces the need for cable pulling, conduit installation, extensive ceiling access, detailed cable planning, and repairs to building surfaces. Existing BACnet equipment can remain in place, protecting previous investments in controllers and field devices.

For system integrators and contractors, this can shorten project timelines, simplify installation, and make it possible to complete more projects with existing resources. For building owners, it provides a less invasive way to modernize.

We are proud to see W-BACnet Compact receive this recognition. Compact makes reliable wireless BACnet easy to deploy, while the award reflects a broader shift toward wireless communication in building modernization. By removing the need for new cabling, W-BACnet can make retrofit projects faster, easier to scale, and far less disruptive

With W-BACnet Compact as the winning entry, the AHR Expo Innovation Award recognizes the broader potential of W-BACnet to change how BACnet projects are designed and delivered. For LumenRadio, it is an important external recognition of the role reliable wireless technology can play in making building automation retrofits faster, more scalable, and less disruptive.
