The Gothenburg Opera: CRMX for world-class performances
At the Gothenburg Opera, one of Sweden’s premier live venues, LumenRadio’s CRMX technology delivers rock-solid reliability and opens the door to bold, creative lighting designs – so that every performance captivates its audience. “It’s really a game-changing technology,” says the opera’s Technical Manager of Lighting and Video, Peter Götzlinger.
The Gothenburg Opera: CRMX for World-Class Performances
ContinueThe Gothenburg Opera hosts a dynamic programme of opera, musicals, and dance, with productions rotating frequently and staging altered daily. This constant transformation leaves no room for uncertainty – the tech needs to be reliable. Every cue must execute flawlessly, night after night, in a high-pressure, live-performance environment.
From Cable Constraints to Creative Freedom
Across the live performance industry, lighting design has evolved. Productions today are dynamic, with moving set pieces, shifting scenery, and lighting taking a central role in shaping the audience experience. Traditional wired DMX meant long cable runs, re-rigging, and navigating complex stage setups – limiting flexibility and consuming valuable time.
With wireless DMX, the Gothenburg Opera’s technical team can place fixtures exactly where the creative vision demands, without being bound by physical cables. From moving heads, panels and spotlights to fixtures built into moving set pieces, everything remains perfectly in sync and under complete control. The result is greater design freedom and faster adaptation to artistic changes. As Peter Götzlinger puts it, “Before using wireless DMX, we had a lot of challenges with complex set designs, pieces that moved on stage and having to run cables among singers, and so on. But nowadays, when we have the signal wireless instead of in cables on the floor, it works really great.”

CRMX and Stardust: The Reliable Core
The rig at the Gothenburg Opera is big. It includes main moving lights from JB-Lighting, hundreds of other fixtures of various types, and an EOS control desk and Sensor dimmers from ETC.
At the heart of the Gothenburg Opera setup is LumenRadio’s Stardust transmitter, distributing control signals with the ultra-reliable stability CRMX is known for. Cognitive Coexistence with adaptive signal management ensures uninterrupted performance, even in challenging radio environments.
The combination of numerous fixtures and CRMX connectivity to the front of house gives the lighting crew the flexibility they want – and the reliability they need.
We have rehearsals in the day and performances in the evening, and we are also doing different kind of productions – both dance, opera and musicals. So we need to have a really flexible rig.

Efficiency Behind the Scenes
Wireless control also brings operational advantages. Programming complex lighting looks becomes faster and more efficient, and redressing the stage between productions is streamlined. Without the need to re-run or hide cables, the team gets more time for creative work, fine-tuning, and rehearsals – all of which elevate the final production.
Before using wireless DMX, we had a lot of problems with the complex set designs; pieces that moved on the stage and to have to run cables among singers, and so on. But nowadays, when we have the signal wireless instad of cables on the floor, it works really great.

Elevating the Audience Experience
For the audience, CRMX-enabled lighting means richer storytelling, deeper immersion, and moments of visual magic that enhance the emotional impact of live performance. Whether it’s subtle mood shifts or grand, sweeping effects, the technology enables designers to push creative boundaries and deliver unforgettable experiences.
For example, we had a dance performance that had a very complex set design, involving 40 Astera tubes. Without the CRMX system from LumenRadio, it would have been impossible to do that kind of design. It’s really a game-changing technology.

An Inspiration for Other Live Venues
The Gothenburg Opera’s success with CRMX demonstrates how wireless control can empower theaters, concert halls, and other live venues to achieve world-class production values. By combining creative flexibility with absolute reliability, LumenRadio’s technology ensures the magic on stage is never interrupted – and the audience always leaves amazed.
I would recommend CRMX system from LumenRadio because it’s very flexible, because you can always find a product that works with CRMX. Everything from big moving heads to small installation equipment like the RC4. It’s a reliable system and that’s very, very important for us.
