Behind the build: creative festival lighting using CRMX
DachüberKopf has been organising raves and parties for over a decade in Germany – and three years ago started running their own non-profit festival in Munich.
Event Organiser, Martin Günzel, explains what makes the festival special.
“One of the things we care most about at our festival – especially on the main stage – is creating a unique stage design with distinctive decorative elements. This year’s theme was ‘jungle’ and as part of that concept we decided to develop wirelessly controlled kinetic lighting fixtures in the shape of large flowers.”
DachüberKopf created 20 motorised blooms themselves from scratch and used LumenRadio’s TiMo RX radio module as a CRMX receiver. TiMo RX gives you a DMX/RDM receiver for one full DMX universe.
“Since setup time during the festival is usually quite stressful, we wanted to implement wireless control for the lighting this year. As we’ve had very good experiences with the CRMX standard, we chose the TiMo RX modules because they are easy for us to integrate as a ready-made solution,” says Martin.
“We started by building the test module into the prototype and it worked first time without any problems,” Martin continues. “We also tested the internal antenna which worked perfectly, so we were able to send data over 100 meters with no interference.”
DachüberKopf invested more than 200 hours into development and manufacturing, starting work in December 2025 to be ready for the festival which ran from June 12-14 2026.
The housings and mechanical parts were made using recycled materials or produced using the company’s own CNC laser and 3D printers. The PCB was specifically designed for this application and manufactured and assembled as a custom order. The firmware was also developed entirely by their in-house team.
“We had a stable, working system from the beginning,” adds Martin. “The kinetic flowers worked perfectly throughout the festival. They were a great success and we received a lot of positive feedback from our visitors.”
