Gruner launches the world’s first wireless Modbus actuator, adding an important piece of the puzzle to the W-Modbus ecosystem
Gruner, Germany’s leading actuator manufacturer and a globally recognized technology leader, is launching the world’s first Wireless Modbus actuator the week of Light + Building. Equipped with LumenRadio’s W-Modbus technology, this release marks a major milestone for the wireless Modbus ecosystem and a defining moment for the future of building automation.
Until now, Wireless Modbus installations have lacked one crucial component: a VAV actuator capable of communicating wirelessly directly over Modbus. Integrators could deploy wireless sensors and wireless room controllers, but the airflow control – the actuator – still depended on wired actuators or external wireless retrofit boxes.
Gruner’s new actuator brings Wireless Modbus connectivity directly into the VAV actuator itself by integrating the LumenRadio W-Modbus module. This allows the device to communicate wirelessly with BMS (building management system), room controllers and sensors, and since it speaks native Modbus, it fits seamlessly into existing architectures without cloud services, converters or add‑ons.
Expanding the Wireless Modbus Ecosystem
The launch of this W-Modbus actuator is a game changer for wireless building automation and unlocks new capabilities in the Wireless Modbus Ecosystem. With Wireless Modbus sensors, room/zone controllers and now also actuators available on the market, it is finally possible to design a fully wireless room solution. Besides simplifying installation and commissioning, it primarily enables building owners to meet modern energy performance regulations such as the EPBD’s push for demand-controlled indoor environments.
“The launch of Gruner’s Wireless Modbus actuator is a defining moment for the Wireless Modbus Ecosystem,” says Carl Wäppling, Product Development Manager, Building Automation at LumenRadio, and continues,
“For the first time, the industry can deploy a complete wireless room solution without having to go outside the traditional building management system. We see the industry rapidly adopting wireless technologies and this milestone enables manufacturers to accelerate their wireless offerings, not only within measurement, but also within real time control.”
Strong demand from major players
Wireless solutions in building automation deliver clear customer value: faster installation, simplified commissioning and lower overall cost. Demand-controlled indoor environments without cabling offer major advantages for building owners, installers and integrators. Gruner is already seeing strong market interest from major industry players actively requesting wireless solutions that reduce installation complexity and increase flexibility.
Gruner’s move to Wireless Modbus reinforces its long‑standing reputation as a company driven by innovation, quality, and customer focus.
“Innovation has always been at the heart of Gruner,” explains Wolfgang Moser, Head of Actuator Development at Gruner.
“Developing the first Wireless Modbus actuator is a natural step for us, and we see the Wireless Modbus Ecosystem as an important part of the future of building automation. We believe the new actuator will set a new industry standard in flexibility, performance and cost-efficiency.”
