Joseph’s Technicolor Dreamcoat dazzles Cape Town – powered by LumenRadio’s MoonLite

A beloved musical, a heritage venue, and no room for compromise. For the Cape Town production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, lighting designer Oliver Hauser turned to LumenRadio’s MoonLite to overcome infrastructure limitations and deliver a visually stunning, fully wireless experience – proving once again that CRMX is made for the spotlight.

When Andrew Lloyd Webber’s iconic musical returns to the stage, it deserves a production as bold as its namesake coat. At Theatre on the Bay in Cape Town, Lighting Designer Oliver Hauser took on the challenge of delivering a contemporary, visually ambitious version of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat – without access to a traditional followspot bridge or permanent DMX infrastructure. The solution? Go wireless with LumenRadio’s MoonLite.

The show opened in April 2025 and runs through July 13, drawing both new and seasoned audiences into a vibrant retelling of Joseph’s journey. The show’s tech suppliers are Eastern Acoustics in collaboration with LumenRadio partner DWR Distribution.

Lighting the way – without cables

Alongside directors Anton Luitingh and Duane Alexander, Hauser approached the production with a clear goal: honor the original while creating a uniquely South African version of the story. This meant fast-paced transitions, immersive lighting, and dramatic, dynamic effects that could shape each scene like a cinematic moment.

We created one canvas that is shaped by light, producing unique visuals for each scene to help guide the audience through Joseph’s journey.

But Theatre on the Bay offered no followspot positions or DMX runs to rely on – posing a real technical challenge for a production of this scale.

Enter MoonLite: the wireless workhorse

To bridge the gap, Hauser used MoonLite transceivers across the rig. These compact, battery-powered CRMX nodes allowed him to merge Art-Net from a Resolume media server and distribute it wirelessly to various fixtures – including the standout LED Pixel Coat worn by Joseph himself.

MoonLite’s flexibility was key. Its dual TX/RX functionality, combined with Bluetooth app setup, made it easy to reposition as needed – even during tight changeovers. Most importantly, it delivered rock-solid reliability, a must in RF-heavy environments like theaters.

The MoonLites were a great tool to wirelessly merge Art-Net from Resolume and transmit it to Joseph’s Pixel Coat. The connection has been consistently reliable, and setting them up was a breeze.”

CRMX made the difference

MoonLite’s wireless capabilities helped the team push the boundaries of what’s possible in a mid-sized venue. Instead of rigging traditional followspots, Hauser used moving-light tracking cues to simulate the effect. Art-Net streams were merged wirelessly for seamless synchronization between video and lighting. And the wireless DMX kept the Pixel Coat in sync even during the most energetic choreography. With no cables to worry about, setup was faster, programming was more flexible, and the team could focus entirely on creative storytelling.

Productions like Joseph are proving that wireless isn’t just a convenience – it’s a creative enabler. Whether you’re working in a heritage venue, facing tight tech schedules, or trying to bring multimedia integration into the spotlight, CRMX gives you the freedom to do more with less infrastructure.
