Wireless mesh u-blox

Wireless mesh -Live demo at SPS trade show

Trade fairs are great examples of environments with lots of radio disturbances and it’s a widespread opinion that showcasing wireless technology at a tradeshow is doomed to fail. But at a tradeshow like SPS, with a focus on smart and digital automation, it’s necessary to be able to showcase wireless connected products for harsh industrial environments. LumenRadio takes on the challenge and will run a live demo between u-blox’s and LumenRadio’s booths.

The significant radio disturbances at trade fairs are due to a lot of people being crammed in a limited area, thousands of visitors with mobile phones in their pockets, many different Wi-Fi networks running in parallel, which all means a heavy usage of the same 2.4GHz frequency band. This leads to congestion in the radio environment resulting in interference, data losses and lots of problems.

The “Interference of Things”

The 2.4GHz band is very popular because it’s a licence free band all over the world, which means that your product can use the same frequencies globally without special configuration. If you, as a product manufacturer, use the 2.4GHz band there is no need for certifying and managing multiple versions of the same product to be able to sell it globally.

But when more and more devices are getting connected to this same frequency band interference becomes a real problem and this congestion could make your wireless enabled product have degraded quality of service or even stop working completely.

The question is; Is there a solution to this exponentially growing problem with interference or is the 2.4GHz band doomed? Is this frequency band now home to the Interference of Things rather than the Internet of Things?

Coexisting wireless mesh

Luckily the solution already exists, and this will be showcased at SPS in Nuremberg on the 26-28th of November. By running LumenRadio’s reliable wireless mesh technology on u-blox radio modules for industrial applications, all doubts will definitely be erased about bad performance of wireless connectivity in harsh industrial environments.

Live at the trade fair we will build a mesh network between LumenRadio’s and u-blox’s booth separated in two different halls, using the embedded operating system called MiraOS from LumenRadio and NINA radio modules from u-blox.

Are you heading to SPS this year? Come by and visit LumenRadio’s and u-blox booths! Don’t miss out when we are pushing the boundaries for reliable wireless mesh!

MIRAOS RELEASE 2.3: Concurrent MiraMesh and Bluetooth operation – a killer feature within wireless connectivity

With LumenRadio’s new release of MiraOS – their operating system known for reliable wireless connectivity, they have solved a problem that has been a well-known challenge for years. MiraOS can now run concurrent Bluetooth and MiraMesh seamlessly during operation, something that opens up for totally new possibilities, flexibility and cost savings for wireless products.

Bluetooth is today the number one technology for short range point-to-point connectivity for smart devices, but it is not suitable for creating a reliable building-wide network. It simply lacks the scalability and range needed to offer complete coverage of today’s commercial and industrial buildings.

The common solution to the problem has been to simply add two wireless chips into the product (a Bluetooth-chip for user interaction and another chip for the building-wide network) – adding cost, hardware size and complexity and increasing the power consumption of the device.

In the connectivity industry, it has been a well-known fact that running multiple protocols with stringent timing requirements, concurrently on the same chip by time-sharing the radio, poses a huge challenge. LumenRadio’s Research and Development team has through dedicated and hard work now cracked the nut and solved the problem. Through the latest release of MiraOS it is now possible to, on the same chip, concurrently combine Bluetooth with the ultra-reliable, low energy, IPv6 capable, meshing network of MiraOS.

Enabling smart device interactions

What this means is that interactions between a wireless product and a smart device is now possible at the same time as the wireless mesh network is being fully operational. Concurrent Bluetooth operation opens up many desired possibilities such as intuitive and hassle-free commissioning and maintenance, locally extracting larger data sets, or possibilities for end user interactions through a smartphone or tablet.

User interactions on the edge within a smart building solution is becoming increasingly important, as we see a trend where workplaces, buildings and production flows are no longer static – rather dynamic, with a need to allow more frequent and easy user interaction with all kinds of equipment. Local control loops can enable individual preferences, something that tomorrow’s activity-based workplaces will require.

“Enabling concurrent Bluetooth and MiraMesh connectivity will give our customers the best of two worlds. This feature can unleash their creativity for smooth, intuitive user experiences while not compromising on reliability and performance. Life at the edge will never be the same again.” Niclas Norlén, CTO, LumenRadio

“Combining Bluetooth and ultra-low energy 6lowpan mesh operation concurrently in the MiraMesh stack has been a complex challenge to solve. Knowing how hard it is to run multiple protocol with stringent timing requirements, concurrently on the same chip makes me even prouder of my team. The knowledge, effort and hard work they have showed in this project is impressive.”
Michael Karlsson, R&D manager, LumenRadio

At LumenRadio we see an ever-increasing demand for concurrent Bluetooth operation and by adding this to our MiraOS we offer the most reliable, low energy consumption and Future-Proof wireless technology on the market.

MiraOS v2.1 new features released - low energy mesh, BLE beacons, Mix&Match formation and high precision time synch

MiraOS release 2.1: Ultra low energy mesh redefined – getting high on going low!

Wireless technology provider LumenRadio has released an update of their embedded operating system for wireless connectivity – MiraOS. One of the main features is the improved ultra low energy consumption for battery operated solutions where they have broken new ground.

MiraOS enables products to become smart and connected through large-scale wireless mesh networks. With LumenRadio’s patented technologies and radio development expertise, product manufacturers can get an ultra-reliable and Future-Proof wireless solution with the most resilient technology on the market.

In addition to decreased energy consumption, the main new features in the MiraOS v2.1 are BLE beacon support, high-precision time-stamping of data and the (patent pending) Mix&Match formation™ technology.

Ultra low energy mesh, >15 years in routing mode
At LumenRadio, low energy meshing mode has been a dedicated focus for their research and development department and their goal has been to reach the lowest consumption possible. With the upgrade to MiraOS v2.1, the energy consumption in meshing mode for battery powered devices has been reduced to half compared to the 2.0 version earlier this year. This means it is reduced to less than 16uA, which enables more than 15 years operation in routing mode from an AA-sized battery, and a leaf node running on a coin cell battery can easily last for 10 years. This consumption is calculated when sending a 160B data message every minute. No other wireless technology can today match this ultra low energy offer enabling Zero Wire technology. In fact, the limitation is based on the lifetime of the battery which today is maximized to 15 years due to self-discharge.

Mix&Match formationTM
Another unique new feature in MiraOS 2.1 is the patent pending Mix&Match formation technology which enables unique interoperability and allows low energy consumption and high data rate configurations to communicate in the same network.

Mix&Match formation gives the possibility to use battery powered meshing nodes in a local network and then build a backbone with mains powered high capacity nodes with long range to send the messages to the gateway. The patent pending Mix&Match formation™ gives a unique flexibility in building large networks with different speed and energy consumption demands. No other wireless technology provider can offer this today.

Support for BLE beaconsMiraOS v2.1 has support for BLE beacons witch gives possibilities for device diagnostics, network status or any kind of one way communication. Beacons can be used for indoor positioning, sending out sensor values, mobile marketing or any other advertisement based data. By combining beacons with MiraOS IPv6 mesh technology it is easy to remotely update the data and contents broadcasted through the beacons.

High precision times stamping of data
High-precision time-stamping of data using multiple wireless sensors enables advanced correlation analysis. In MiraOS 2.1 the relative precision of timestamps is below <+/-5μs /hop for any size of the network which is exceptional. This is important in for example industrial sensor networks and gives extreme accurate time synchronization of events and data.

New features in MiraOS 2.1

  • Ultra-low energy, <16μA for routing nodes
  • Mix&Match formation™ technology – patent pending
  • BLE beacon support
  • High-precision (<+/-5μs) time-stamping of data
  • Increased network speed performance – 1200 data messages (160B) per minute
  • Hardware support for Nordic nRF52840, NXP MKW41x and LumenRadio
    MLE / MWA modules.
